CCSL – Combined Continuity and Spotting List

A CCSL (Combined Continuity and Spotting List) is a detailed post-production document that records a finished film or TV program shot-by-shot, with frame-accurate timecodes, full dialogue, scene descriptions, and music cues. Distributors, broadcasters, and film festivals require a CCSL for international distribution, dubbing, subtitling, and copyright registration.

CCSL stands for Combined Continuity and Spotting List. It combines two documents into one: a continuity list (a cut-by-cut visual description of every shot in the film) and a spotting list (the full transcript of dialogue, narration, music, and on-screen text with frame-accurate timecodes).

A CCSL is delivered as a Microsoft Word document (and PDF) in table format, with columns for shot number, timecode in, timecode out, duration, scene description, dialogue, and subtitles. Each row represents a single shot or line of dialogue, frame-accurate to the digital master. Distributors require the CCSL conformed to the final cut, with English translations included if any dialogue is in another language.

A spotting list is a list of every line of dialogue and on-screen text in a film, with precise timecodes (in, out, and duration) for each entry. It’s used by translators and subtitle editors to produce accurate, synchronized subtitles and closed captions. When combined with a continuity list, a shot-by-shot visual description, it becomes a CCSL.

A continuity list, also called a dialogue continuity script or action continuity script, is the same document as a CCSL. It’s a cut-by-cut written record of every shot in a finished film, including visual action, dialogue, and timecodes synced to the digital master. As Amazon’s delivery spec describes it: “A transcription is an exact record of every spoken word, verbal cue or music cue existing within a media property. Unlike a final shooting script which can undergo changes, the transcription is created after a media property has been fully completed. In addition to the dialogue or music cue, there is a column identifying which character is speaking as well as the exact timecode (in a HH:MM:SS format) that the cue is taking place.”

Yes! Most film festivals and distributors require a CCSL as part of the standard delivery package, particularly for films screening internationally. If a distributor picks up your film, the CCSL will almost always be a contractual deliverable for foreign distribution, dubbing, and subtitling.

Beyond being a delivery requirement for distributors and networks, a CCSL gives you a detailed map of your film. You’ll know exactly where every word was spoken, who said it, what was happening on screen, and whether the shot was a close-up or wide  shot, making the CCSL a reference document used in re-edits, version control, and international localization.
