What’s included in a CCSL?

  • Action Continuity
The continuity script is an accurate transcription of the picture master with corresponding running time code referencing specific photographic action, characters and transcribed audio. It includes each and every shot in the film.
  • Speaker Identification
Each speaker is identified whenever a new line of dialogue is spoken. If the speaker is not shown, then we define it as an off-screen dialogue.
  • Accurate Time Code
Each dialogue has an accurate time code synced to the second. If there is imprinted running timecode on the video, then we time accordingly.
  • Subtitle duration
The duration of each subtitle consisting of two lines.
  • Transcription of Speech
All spoken dialogue is transcribed, including interruptions and pauses.
  • Speaker relevant sound effects
Any sound effect emanating from a speaker is included, which may be relevant to the narrative. This may include sighing, coughing, screaming among others.
  • Music and Lyrics
All music starts are included. Lyrics are encapsulated with the ♪ symbol to identify them as lyrics.

Yes, this is called a CCSL or DCL.

What is CCSL file’s purpose in film?
If your film is going to be exhibited in foreign film festivals or distributed overseas, a CCSL can be used for translation, dubbing and other post-production areas.
Is CCSL required for film festivals?
A CCSL is usually required if you are planning to submit and screen your film in film festivals. If a distributor is interested in your film a CCSL will most likely be required as a deliverable package.
How can a CCSL help me?
In addition to being a delivery requirement of a distributor or network, having a CCSL will give you a detailed picture of your film. You will know where every word was spoken; Who said it? What was happening on screen? Was it a close-up or a wide shot? It gives you a detailed map of your production.
    Is CCSL produced manually?
While we have some in-house custom made software solutions to help with formatting and syncing, the actual grunt work is all done meticulously by our experts in the field. This means that every single shot in the film is studied and described. Every word is transcribed. Every speaker is identified. Every lyric and sound effect is heard by human ears.
    What is dialogue continuity script?
A dialogue continuity script or an action continuity script is the same as CCSL.
As Amazon’s delivery document says “A transcription is an exact record of every spoken word, verbal cue or music cue existing within a media property. Unlike a final shooting script which can undergo changes, the transcription is created after a media property has been fully completed. In addition to the dialogue or music cue, there is a column identifying which character is speaking as well as the exact timecode (in a HH:MM:SS format) that the cue is taking place. For application of transcript and how these cues are placed within a property for delivery purposes, a reference copy of the media property with a burned in running time code is used for syncing (see ‘Reference Copy with Time Code’ above).”
What is Combined Action Continuity/Dialogue Spotting List?
Just another name for CCSL, Combined dialogue action continuity and spotting list containing all spotted dialogue, narration, sound vocals, all opening titles and complete end credits appearing in Trailer, as well as a cut-by-cut description of the action of the Picture in its final form, with footage and frame counts showing footage in, footage out and total duration of each line of dialogue (translated into English if not in English originally).
Feature Dialogue And Continuity Spotting List and CCSL is the same?
Yes. It fullfills the following requirements: One (1) Word document, in the English language, of a detailed, final dialogue and action continuity of the completed Picture containing all dialogue, narration and song vocals. The CDSL shall contain a cut by cut description of the Picture action and dialogue/narration by timecode matching the digital master. If any dialogue in the Picture was recorded in whole or in part in a language other than English, the native language shall be included in the CDSL, along with the English translation, and a separate English subtitle file shall be delivered.
Is this a BBC description of a CCSL?
CDSL: Combined Dialogue and Spotting List containing the final and complete As Broadcast Dialogue List used for creation of closed captions, SDH and localisation files of the final Picture. This As Broadcast Script will include transcriptions of all dialogue and on-screen text from start of picture through completion of picture (not inclusive of credits including “in” and “out” cut-by-cut footage and frames, character dialogue, character efforts (e.g. “grunts” or “sighs”), transcription of titles and text on screens and translations of all dialogue spoken other than English.
