An As-Broadcast Script or commonly known as ABS is produced for the final version of the film or television program required by distributors and broadcasters. ABS can be used to create subtitles, closed captions and translations. The two main types are the script format and the technical format.

The broadcast script format is created in a screenplay style. This screenplay formatted style is suitable for narrative, scripted film or television productions. It is delivered to broadcasters, networks or studios with the master edit. It includes the following:

  • Time code at 1 minute intervals
  • Speaker Identification
  • Transcription of speech
  • Scene headings including interior/exterior location and time of day
  • Description of basic action
  • On screen text

As-Broadcast Script Technical Format

The technical format of the ABS is commonly used for factual programming like documentary, lifestyle or reality shows. It is a three column format and includes:

  • Accurate timecode of dialogue or scene
  • Speaker Identification
  • Transcription of speech
  • Scene headings including interior/exterior location and time of day
  • Description of basic action
  • On screen text like lower thirds and titles

      Difference between as broadcast script and CCSL?
      An as broadcast script includes visual scene description while a CCSL (Combined Action Continuity, Dialogue and Spotting List) contains description of each and every shot in the film.
      Does as broadcast script include continuity script?
      An as-broadcast script includes description of the action that is taking place on screen. However a continuity script is more detailed and part of the CCSL. If you need detail of each shot then a CCSL is recommended.
